Background of the Study
Butuan is known as a Historical City due to its landmarks that was discovered and proved “In the beginning, there was no Philippines but there was Butuan.
One of the Butuanons pride landmarks is the “Madjapahit Empire” ancient name of Mt. Mayapay. The name Mt. Mayapay was believed to have derived from Madjapahit Empire, a name which we could relate the history behind the Sri Vishaya period and the Southeast Asia within its sphere of influence around the 10th or 11th century.
During the ancient times, Madjapahit Empire already served as a landmark to seafaring traders such as Chinese, Indonesians and etc. Whenever these traders saw the view, the plateau, the summit that rose above the plains, the delta and the valley of this north eastern part of Mindanao, they sure knew that they already reached their trading destination of Butuan.
Today, the Madjapahit Empire (Mt.Mayapay) is a denuded mountain due to its illegal activities of the people and continuous invading its nature. It is also recorded that if there is nothing done of Mt.Mayapay, it will put Butuan City into a catastrophic landslide.
This study entitled “Madjapahit Empire: Historic Mountain of Butuanons” is an entry for DOON PO SA AMIN video blog under the category of science and environment. This study focuses the active and continuous denudation of Madjapahit Empire (Mt. Mayapay) by the people surrounding it. This also aims to enlighten the people on the significance of preserving Mt. Mayapay.
